A Frame Of Mind

It’s a fact that when our vision is obscured or blurred in anyway, it greatly affects our moods; a crack in the glass, a foggy road, a big hairdo in the seat in front of you at the cinema. These things not only irritate and annoy but can really shift our frame of mind. So, when choosing a beautiful painting or photograph of a landscape to hang in your home, you’d certainly want the image framed allowing a perfectly clear view of the piece, unobscured and unbroken so that you can gaze and admire the artwork freely.

In the frame

A picture frame is a decorative edging for a picture such as a painting or a photograph and its intention is to enhance the piece and make it easier to display or protect it. Traditionally picture frames have been made of wood, which is still the most common material, although other materials can be used such as plastics, cardboard, polystyrene, silver, bronze and aluminium. The picture frames usually contain a pane of picture framing glass or an acrylic glass substitutes to protect the picture.

Frame history

One of the earliest discoveries was a wooden framed portrait of a fayum mummy found in an Egyptians tomb in Hawara, dating back to 2nd Century AD. In most ancient art, framing borders were used to divide scenes in mainly wall paintings but the first carved wooden frames, appeared on a small panel painting in the 12th and 13th century. Throughout the following centuries most European frames were commissioned by the church and were unmovable due to being part of the church’s architecture.
