Contemporary Verandas

The outdoor appendages, such as verandas and porches of our homes and dwellings are an important consideration when designing or renovating. Architects must take many factors into consideration including style and up to date trends which have also changed and evolved greatly through time.

A Space For All Seasons

A sun room is an American term for a stylish open, glazed space that offers access to extra natural light and green views, in other words a glass room. It can also be referred to as a solarium, a winter room, patio room, patio conservatory, sun porch, sun parlour, garden conservatory, garden room, patio room. It is a room that is either integrated or attached to the primary building such as an office or residency. It functions as a comfortable relaxing exterior space whilst also providing an extension to the outdoors and regardless of the climate or weather; a room to relax, grow plants and watch nature all year round.

A Frame Of Mind

It’s a fact that when our vision is obscured or blurred in anyway, it greatly affects our moods; a crack in the glass, a foggy road, a big hairdo in the seat in front of you at the cinema. These things not only irritate and annoy but can really shift our frame of mind. So, when choosing a beautiful painting or photograph of a landscape to hang in your home, you’d certainly want the image framed allowing a perfectly clear view of the piece, unobscured and unbroken so that you can gaze and admire the artwork freely.

Flexible Family Living

Space is always an issue in our homes, especially for a growing family. Our living areas can feel very overcrowded and once our children get bigger and families expand, our homes can feel very small. If our weather were more reliable with longer summers similar to the Mediterranean, then outdoor life would support the need for more space, and our gardens and back yards would then act as an extra room. However, even with the amazing heatwave we’ve enjoyed this year, the evenings have more often than not been too cool to stay outdoors, and with the onset of autumn and sporadic showers, it can be very demoralising to set up all your garden furniture only to have to dismantle and abandon it at a moment’s notice.

Extend The Season

Autumn is here and despite the hint of Indian summer on the odd day, the weather is very much on the turn. In fact with the rain and the wind picking up it looks like we’re all going to have to change our indoor and outdoor living routines eg. Bringing our perishables in including those non-hardy plants, packing away garden furniture, covering the barbecue, and firing up that leaf blower.

Lack of light also changes our moods and for some of us, quite severely. The symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are similar to those of normal depression, but they can occur repetitively at the beginning of autumn or winter and improve in the spring. 30% of us suffer from this syndrome and it can make the winter months a very bleak time.
